Arliss Vareen Griffin of Jacksonville, FL age 82, passed away Monday, February 27, 2017 from complications of a lengthy illness. Arliss was born December 13, 1934 in Coffee County, GA to George and Mattie Purvis Griffin. He was predeceased by his 1st wife of 32 years, Louise Lindsey Griffin, and just nine months ago, his son Ashley Griffin. George Washington Carver Freshman Campus (GWCFC) student Leana Atkinson, makes and sells her own cane syrup. Leana, who’s a member of the GWCFC FFA and current secretary, began growing cane for her Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) while in middle school. This project was natural for her to get into because she grew up around syrup making. Her grandfather, Waldo Chaney, has made cane syrup his whole life and was instrumental in teaching Leana everything he could about growing sugar cane and processing it into syrup. Students in the South Georgia State College Bachelor of Biological Science program recently toured Sunbelt Greenhouses in Douglas. The group, led by Dr. Rosa Guedes, assistant professor of biology and ecology, was able to learn the process of growing and caring for plants as well as various careers in the industry and facts about the Douglas plant and its logistics operations. The South Georgia State College softball team added two games to the win column on Tuesday with a sweep of a home doubleheader over Georgia Military College. Students in career, technical, and agricultural education classes (CTAE), which are Mr. Highsmith’s (agricultural teacher), Mrs. Cummings (our business and technology teacher), Mrs. Barlow’s (digital technology teacher) and Mrs. Ross’s (the family consumer science teacher) classes, were given the opportunity to choose a career of their liking and job shadow someone in the area of expertise. Mr. Byron Mullican of Brooklet, Past Lieutenant Governor for Division 17, was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the Flyin’ Cowboy Restaurant. Mr. Mullican informed the club that Georgia Division 17, which includes Douglas, tied with Division 15 as the best division in Georgia. Of the 18 Divisions in Georgia, the top five Divisions accomplished more projects than any other Kiwanis Division in North America and Europe. The South Georgia State Hawks baseball team won two out of three games in a weekend series against Central Florida Community College on Douglas’s Crider Field. The Hawks defeated Central Florida 6-2 on Friday to start the series. SGSC took the lead in the bottom of the third with a single run and then added three more in the fifth.
