Satilla Regional Library held its Children’s Christmas Party on Saturday, December 3, at the Douglas-Coffee County Public Library, along with help from the Douglas Kiwanis Club. The children and families enjoyed activities including snowman slam, where they were to knock down snowmen with marshmallows, Christmas and Holiday Bingo, Christmas Tree Ring Toss, Christmas tree wrap, and making holiday crafts. Crafts included making your own Christmas tree, coloring, and more. There was a raffle ticket prize giveaway for two lucky winners. Frosted cookies and cider were served. Brandon and Elizabeth Burnam were the speakers at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday, Dec. 20, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. Mrs. Gwendolyn Royal Lott, age 83, of Ambrose, GA passed away on Monday, December 19, 2016, at her residence following an extended illness. Mrs. Lott was born on July 5, 1933, to the late Alfred R. Royal and the late Allie Irene Royal. She was a lifelong resident of Ambrose, GA. She lived most of her life as a homemaker. The second half of 2016 saw the introduction of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed.) and its class, Food Talk, to Coffee County. Food Talk offers six lessons that cover topics such as meal planning, sodium and its effect on blood pressure, the importance of increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, how to read a nutrition label, understanding fats, and food safety. These classes are taught in a relaxed session and typically last 60 minutes. Participants hear a lesson, receive take home items to help reinforce the lesson presented and also sample two recipes prepared in a cooking demonstration. …

As the temperature outside drops, Douglas families take to the indoors to keep safe and warm. What they may not realize is that turning up the heat can increase the risk of home heating fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), half of all home-heating fires occur during the winter months. Citizens in Douglas and Coffee County helped spread joy to children in the community by raising approximately $4,000 and donating hundreds of toys for the Community Toy Drive. The City of Douglas, along with many local community agencies, hosted Community Toy Drives for boys and girls during the months of November and December. The yearly bowling party for the youth of the Hahira Sheriffs’ Youth Home was held Sunday, December 18, at the Rockin’ Roll Bowlin’ center in Douglas. Forty youth and adults from the home enjoyed the event, which was sponsored by the Douglas Kiwanis Club. Donations from the Kiwanis Club, the Citizens Christian Academy Key Club, and Sheriff Doyle Wooten provided Christmas gift cards. Geraldine Cauley Hill Veal, age 82, of Ambrose, GA passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2016, at her residence following an extended illness. Mrs. Veal was born on May 29, 1934, in Ambrose, GA to the late Nead Cauley and Ethel Merritt Cauley. Mrs. Veal was a charter member and oldest member of Calvary Mission Holiness Baptist Church.
