City of Douglas Public Information Director Georgia Henderson and Douglas Media Relations/Event Coordinator Blondale Thomas attended the Georgia Department of Economic Development’s Tourism, Hospitality and Arts Day at the Georgia State Capital this week to represent the City of Douglas and the Magnolia Midlands Travel Association (MMTA). Tourism, Hospitality, and Arts Day is a two-day event for Georgia tourism industry partners. The judges were members of the community who took time to sample each pot of chili and determine the winners. Douglas Commissioner Kentaiwon Durham received the prestigious Certificate of Recognition from the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute at the Georgia Municipal Association’s (GMA) Mayors’ Day Conference in Atlanta on Jan 22. The Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute, a cooperative effort of GMA and the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government, provides a nationally recognized series of training opportunities for elected city officials. Greg Tucker, AirMedCare, was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday, Jan. 24, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. Mr. Tucker spoke about the Air Evac Lifeteam system which consist of ambulance helicopters throughout the state staffed with medical personnel ready to evacuate injured persons to appropriate medical facilities at a moments notice. The Coffee High Robotics Team qualified two VEX robots for the 2017 Georgia State Championship this past Saturday, January 21. The team did so by winning the Lowndes High School qualification tournament and by taking home the trophy for best engineering robot in the competition. The team’s two qualifying robots made it to the state tournament, which sends 19 robots to the World Championships in Louisville, KY, in late April, via two different paths. Mr. John Wesley Davis, age 96, of West Green, GA passed away Wednesday evening , January 18, 2017 at the home of his son, Charlie Davis, in West Green. Mr. Davis was born November 7, 1920 to the late Lewis Charlton Davis and the late Sophronie C. Lewis Davis.
