Westside Elementary hosted a school-wide spelling bee Monday, Nov. 14, starring homeroom spelling bee winners in grades four and five. All participants were presented with certificates in recognition of their hard work in preparation for the contest. Five South Georgia State College players are preparing for the next steps in their college baseball careers by signing letters of intent last week. The players will be dominant forces on the SGSC Hawks team this spring and then part ways to continue playing at the next level. Bradly Cammack, a right handed pitcher from Treutlen County, Ga., has committed to Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville. A late second half run, and strong shooting from the three-point line, helped the South Georgia State College Hawks extend their winning streak to four games Saturday afternoon, defeating TAAG Academy 94-77. The game was back-and-forth in the first half, which included 12 ties and 10 lead changes. The Hawks (4-0) led 42-41 at halftime, and the game remained close until the 7:45 mark in the second half. Pearlie Privett, age 73, of Douglas, Ga. passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. following an extended illness. Mrs. Privett was born on November 5, 1943, in Willacoochee, Ga. to the late George Washington Richardson and Effie Kay Davis Richardson. Survivors include: her husband, Irvin C. More than eight hundred middle and high school students from Bacon and Coffee County Schools were busy having fun while learning on the Coffee campus recently. CLOVERLEAF 4-H DANCE FUNDRAISER Cloverleaf 4-H members are invited to the next Cloverleaf 4-H Dance Fundraiser on Thursday, November 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door, but you must purchase a 4-H wristband from your school teacher. Jimmy Barnett was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday, Nov. 7, at the Flyin’ Cowboy Restaurant. Jimmy spoke about his life experiences with karate, boxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu and how he came to start coaching Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He currently coaches in Eastman and recently started coaching in Douglas within the last six weeks at the Better Bodies Gym. Mr. Barnett demonstrated a triangle, chain, and technical stand up for the group.
