The Coffee County School District Spelling Bee was held in the Coffee Middle School Auditorium Wednesday, February 3 at 9 a.m. After a welcome from Coffee High Counselor Angelique Austin and a reading of the rules and regulations by Assistant Superintendent Dr. Bernie Evans, participants from Coffee Middle School and each of the county’s eight elementary schools began competing. Awards were presented by Mr. Tim Carswell to the winners: Bennett Bush- Champion; Carson Neely- Runner-up; Cailey Martinez- 3rd place. Due to the continued rain and rising water on roads, Coffee County schools will be closed for students, faculty and staff Friday, February 5. School will resume on Monday, February 8. If there are any changes over the weekend, notification will be shared with all media.
Due to recent heavy rainfall, areas of Douglas may experience flooding. Citizens are asked to use extreme caution for the next few days. If you are affected by flooding, call 912-389-3450 and a city representative will come to assess the situation and see what measures need to be taken. Citizens who see flooded areas are asked to stay clear of them and do not try to drive through flooded roadways. If you see a flooded area that needs attention, please report it immediately to the public works department at 912-389-3450, dial 311 or 912-384-3302.

Satilla Regional Library System held their Teen Advisory Group Meeting on Saturday, January 30, at the Douglas/Coffee County Public Library. The meeting started with introductions and Mad Libs. The teens then discussed upcoming teen programming at Satilla Regional Library and offered suggestions and discussion on great teen reads for the library system. The South Georgia State College (SGSC) Hawks did all they could in their home opener, but it wasn’t enough to get past Santa Fe, as the Hawks lost both games. In the first game of the series, Zack Rafuse paced the Hawks at the plate and went 1-1 to score one run. He also tripled in the seventh inning. Robby Clements, Community Education Representative, Bethany Hospice, was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday, Feb. 2 at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. Mr. Clements spoke about the importance of the Advanced Health Care Directive (AHCD), which is designed to make your wishes known when you are no longer capable of making health care decisions. An alternative to this is a Health Care Power of Attorney, which is done through an attorney and supersedes any AHCD.
