South Georgia State College (SGSC) walked away with several awards at the Phi Theta Kappa Georgia Region Spring Regional Convention held recently in Atlanta, Ga. Six SGSC students and two advisors, Amy Hancock and Ame Wilkerson, from the Douglas and Waycross Campuses, attended this year’s convention. Both SGSC chapters were again designated as Five Star Chapters, the highest level a chapter can achieve. The SGSC chapters include Kappa Sigma on the Douglas Campus and Alpha Rho Omega on the Waycross Campus. South Georgia State College (SGSC) students Charles Pridgen of Broxton, Susana Rojas Mandujano of Douglas, Courtney Falvo of Waycross, and Kolby Kicklighter of Blackshear were named to the All-Georgia Academic Team, a program sponsored by two-year college presidents, the national honor society for two-year colleges Phi Theta Kappa, and community college state associations. Parents and students enjoyed taking silly pictures in the photo booth, complete with props and various Dr. Seuss books. Two South Georgia State College baseball players have signed letters of intent to continue their baseball careers at the four-year level. Jared Crews and Mikal Flores, both sophomores from Baker County, Fla., have committed to Middle Georgia State University in Macon, Ga., under the leadership of Coach Paul Knight. Crews is an infielder and pitcher for the Hawks. So far this season, his batting average is .270 with three doubles, one triple, two homeruns and eight runs. Broxton-Mary Hayes Elementary School’s 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are a part of the Broxton Running Club. Marathon Kids, sponsored by Nike, has made this running program and student rewards possible through a grant provided to the school. Broxton Elementary is the only school in the state of Georgia to receive this grant. The running program emphasizes setting and achieving fitness goals. The long-term goal is for each student to complete the length of four marathons, 104.8 miles. Students receive rewards when they complete each marathon.
