Wiregrass Georgia Technical College will offer a driver’s education 36-hour course on the Coffee Campus December 21, 22, 28, and 29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The six hour behind the wheel driving will be scheduled after classroom instruction ends. The program consists of 30 hours of classroom training and six hours of training behind the wheel. The program is designed to meet the training requirements of Joshua’s law as well as provide six of the 40 hours of supervised driving that teens must have before obtaining their driver’s license. The Satilla Regional Library System welcomed Mrs. Rowe’s and Mrs. Worth’s second and third grade classes from Indian Creek Elementary School to the Douglas/Coffee County Public Library on Thursday, November 12, for Thanksgiving story time. The stories read were What is Thanksgiving Day? by Margot Parker and Thanksgiving Is Here! by Diane Goode. Coffee Middle School parents, students, and teachers welcomed and enjoyed Pastor Victor Gilbert of New Life Christian Worship Center during the school’s November prayer breakfast. As fall and Halloween arrived during October, creepy crawly spiders landed on the top of Eastside Elementary Pre-K students. The students have been focusing on some of the old nursery rhymes that many of their parents and grandparents learned as they grew up. Two of the students’ favorites were The Itsy Betsy Spider and Little Miss Muffet. The children enjoyed participating in the finger play as well as acting out Little Miss Muffet with props and music. Parents, students, and staff are excited to increase perfect attendance at Westside Elementary School during the 2015-2016 school year! With the Georgia State Indicator rule, students should not miss more than six days of school – excused or unexcused, being implemented, our parents, students, and staff are working extra hard to make sure perfect attendance is at the top of our priority list. Thomas Michael Prewett, age 63, of Douglas, GA passed away on Monday, November 9, 2015, at his residence following a brief illness. Mr. Prewett was born on March 17, 1952, in Montbrom, France to the late Col. James F. Prewett and Shirley Prewett. The fourth grade students at West Green Elementary School were excited recently to have Brandon Burnam visit. He brought his guitar and talked to the students about volume and pitch of sound, as well as playing and singing to them. The fourth graders have been studying sound in their science class and learned a great deal from the real world connection Mr. Burnam’s visit provided. Gina Gibbs of the Douglas Recreation Department was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. The Childhood Cancer Awareness Group of Coffee County will be hosting its annual Tree Lighting Ceremony Tuesday, November 17, at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Coffee County Courthouse. Childhood cancer families will be asked to place a butterfly on the tree to symbolize their child’s status at that time. Gold butterflies are for hope, and blue butterflies symbolize a child currently in treatment. Silver butterflies represent childhood cancer survivors, and white butterflies symbolize our angels who passed away from their childhood cancer diagnosis.
