Coffee Middle School participated in a week-long, county-wide fundraiser (Drop a “Buck in the Bucket”) to support activities for our special needs students and teachers. South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) Lady Hawks softball team finished a four-game series with all wins. The Lady Hawks (8-5) took two games from USC-Salkehatchie at home Feb. 18 with scores of 3-0 and 6-3 and followed with wins of 6-1 and 9-1 Feb. 20 against Georgia Military College. A wild pitch that plated Allyson Dowdy gave the Lady Hawks the lead in the sixth inning, and they hung on to win game one 3-0. Nine South Georgia State College student athletes signed letters of intent Feb. 3 to play soccer at the next level. Surrounded by family, friends and coaches, the athletes signed their letters on National Signing Day, officially accepting athletic scholarships offered to them by a college or university. The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour teed it up at King and Prince Golf Course in St. Simons Island, Ga. from Feb. 20-21 for the Golden Isles Junior Challenge. Once again, the weather played a huge part in keeping the scores close. Sunny skies and minimal winds allowed the players to showcase their true game. George Earl Harrell, age 63, of Douglas, GA passed away on Monday, February 22, 2016, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Harrell was born on January 28, 1953, in Douglas, GA to Nadavah Davis Harrell and the late Tom Harrell. The Childhood Cancer Awareness Group of Coffee County announced Friday the organization recently received a $2,500 donation from America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund and directed by local farmers Ricky and Ben Smith. The donation will help the organization assist families with children suffering with childhood cancer by providing travel expense back and forth to medical appointments and by providing much needed financial assistance for the payment of necessary household expenses.
