Coffee Middle School’s February Prayer Breakfast welcomed speaker Sammy Smith. He is a lay speaker, Gideon, and attends Christian Fellowship Church in Osierfield. Mr. Smith spoke about the importance of praying for our leaders, pastors, and each other. The devil’s goal is to divide and destroy. John Butler, Associate Pastor, or First Baptist Church in Douglas, was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting of Tuesday, Feb. 16 at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. Several citizens have raised concerns about rumored City of Douglas plans to build a roundabout at the Touchton Drive and Red Bird Drive intersection of Touchton Woods subdivision. A roundabout is a type of circular intersection or junction in which road traffic flows almost continuously in one direction around a central island. The City meet with the Georgia Department of Transportation two or three years ago regarding placing roundabouts in certain areas of Douglas as traffic calming devices. Mrs. Cecelia Maxine Martsching Deen, age 72, of Douglas passed away February 16, 2016, at the Coffee Regional Medical Center, following a short illness. She was born December 31, 1943 to the late James Martsching and the late Lola Carnes Martsching. Mrs. Deen, a native of Ottumwa, Iowa, was a retired employee of Elixer Industries. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Newton Deen. Over 440 students from area schools convened on South Georgia State College’s Douglas Campus on Friday, Feb. 5 for the Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Participants from Appling, Atkinson, Brantley, Charlton, Coffee, Echols, Pierce, and Ware counties brought in their best science fair projects to be judged using several criteria, including thoroughness, proper source citation and adherence to the scientific method. Science projects are important components of the curriculum in many elementary, middle and high schools. Students choose a particular problem they would like to investigate. Chelsea Lyons led the offensive attack by going 5-for-8 on the weekend with one RBI and four stolen bases.
