The South Georgia State College (SGSC) Foundation recently hosted its annual scholarship reception for scholarship donors and current recipients in Engram Hall. Mr. Brian McNeill, SGSC Foundation President, welcomed all guests and expressed gratitude to the donors. McNeill stated, “Through your support and generosity, we are helping prepare for the future with these academically talented young people. West Green Elementary third grade students recently enjoyed a day at the Okefenokee Swamp. The students, parents, and teachers took a boat ride and learned about snakes, turtles, and alligators at an animal show. They also were treated to a train ride around the swamp. Julie Macomber was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting of Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. Julie spoke about “The Big Band Era : 1935-1945,” a paper written by her late grandfather, Charles Rudibaugh, Jr., who was a Kiwanian in Ohio for over 60 years. The program covered the greats like Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Jimmy Dorsey, and Benny Goodman among many others. The Satilla Regional Library System held its bookmark art contest winners’ ceremony on Saturday, October 10, at the Douglas-Coffee County Public Library. The contest was held from September 8 through October 2. Participants in Atkinson and Coffee Counties drew a bookmark with the theme “Why Reading Is Fun!” and submitted it to any Satilla Regional Library branch in person. The Douglas Visitor Information Center (Ashley-Slater House) will offer everyone a chance to kickoff Halloween with two candlelight ghost tours as an October promotion. The tours will be held Thursday, October 22 at 6:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. at the historic Ashley-Slater House located at 211 S. Gaskin Avenue.
