Mr. Joseph Hamilton Roberts, age 93, of Douglas passed away Wednesday morning, Sept. 2, 2015, at the VA Medical Center, in Lake City, Florida, following a short illness. He was born August 12, 1922 to the late George David Roberts and the late Mary Sears Roberts. Leon Whitley, age 81, of Douglas, GA passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2015, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Whitley was born on February 4, 1934, in Alma, GA to the late Clifford Whitley and Sally Mae Clements Whitley. The Telecommunications and Security Program on the Ben Hill-Irwin campus of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College recently received a large donation. Connectivity Wireless, Inc. of Duluth, Georgia donated an assorted selection of cable and wireless equipment valued at $96,409.87 to the Telecommunication program. The Telecommunications program prepares students to work in the telecommunications industry. From broadband to wire line technologies as well as other low voltage type systems. The South Georgia State College Women’s Soccer Team started their fall season in a scrimmage against Brewton Parker College, and the Hawks came out on top in a 3-0 win, with goals by Melissa Carpenter, Bailey Pickering, and Shanelle Frederick. The Hawks then played South Georgia United and scored two goals by Abby Cuneo and Melissa Carpenter to take the win, 2-0. South Georgia State College recently completed renovations to one of its many historic buildings on its Douglas Campus. Now known as the Alumni House, what once served as the living quarters for past college presidents and their families now houses office space, multi-purpose meeting spaces, a catering kitchen, and a VIP guest bedroom suite to house visitors while they are here conducting college business. Originally built in 1953 for former College President William S. Smith, for whom the library is named, the Alumni House was where his daughter, Diana Smith Highsmith, grew up.
