The Southern Elite 13U baseball team traveled to Dallas, GA June 10-12 to participate in Georgia’s USSSA Open/Major State Championship tournament. The young men of Southern Elite won the tournament and are now Georgia’s USSSA State Champions. For the weekend, SE went 5-1 in the double elimination tournament with notable wins against two highly ranked Major teams. Satilla Regional Library System welcomed Mr. Steve Hein, Director and Founder of The Center for Wildlife Education at Georgia Southern University, to the Douglas-Coffee County Public Library on Wednesday, June 15. Mr. Hein presented a wildlife show with birds of prey, raptors, reptiles and more. The animals he included were a grey eyed screech owl, harris hawk, possum, red rat snake, eastern banded king snake, and Madagascar hissing cockroaches. He educated the children and audience about these animals while encouraging them to read about these various animals. Kayla Tatum was recognized as this year’s CHS recipient of the Christian Leadership Award during the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. A check for the 4-H summer camp scholarships was also presented to Kevin Tatum. Steve Young, Director of the Douglas Parks and Recreation Department, was the speaker for the night.
