Mr. John Archie Roberts, age 84 of Douglas, passed away Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at his home following an extended illness. He was born June 17, 1930, the youngest of two children, to the late John Mitchel Roberts and Rachel McKinnon. J.A., a native of Atkinson County, lived the majority of his life in Douglas, working as a farmer (awarded Outstanding Young Farmer 1965), handyman, loving husband, and father. Dr. Robert Lightfoot, associate professor of criminal justice/sociology at South Georgia State College, was recently invited to be a presenter and panelist at LibertyCon in Chattanooga, Tenn. Lightfoot’s presentation was based on his recently published work, “Sorry, We Didn’t Mean to Break Your Culture.” The main idea centered on how “small, seemingly insignificant objects” from one culture can cause “massive disruptions in unpredictable manners” in other cultures. Clifford has been helping Pre-K students in Mrs. Marla Day’s class at West Green Elementary School learn position words – above, under, and in front of. He has also been going on “spend the night” visits with the students to help them overcome beginning-of-the-year jitters. Clifford carries his diary in his overnight bag and writes about his adventures with the help of the students’ families. Last Thursday, during the regular monthly meeting of the Coffee County Board of Education, students from all levels were recognized during the annual presentation of the system’s artwork calendar. Entering its twenty-second year of production, the school board recognized those students whose art was selected for display on the 2014-2015 school calendar. Kim Clayton, Director of Personnel and Public Relations, presented each student with a certificate, as all students earned the monthly Superintendent’s Award. On Thursday, August 28, The Douglas Area Employer Committee, represented by Gary Evans from Southwire, donated $1500 to the new REACH Georgia program. REACH Georgia is a needs-based mentoring and scholarship program designated to ensure that Georgia’s academically promising students have the academic, social, and financial support needed to graduate from high school and complete college. Five community partners are needed to donate $1500 and the Georgia Finance Commission Scholarship Program will then invest $10,000 for a student’s college career.
