The Coffee Lady Trojans stopped a three-game skid and won the season series against the Veterans Warhawks with a doubleheader sweep at Faircloth Field Thursday afternoon. The Lady Trojans erased a two-run deficit late in game one, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to win 6-5. Coffee carried the rally over into game two, scoring eight in the first enroute to an eventual 12-0 victory in four innings.
Kanlee Douglas had quite a day. Over the two games, she was 6-7 with a double, a home run, four runs scored, and four RBI. She was also the winning pitcher in game one, throwing an 84-pitch complete game.
In game one, the Lady Trojans were down 5-3 in the sixth inning. Helped by a series of costly errors by the Warhawks, Coffee scored three to take a 6-5 lead that proved to be the difference in the game. In the sixth, Addie Spikes reached on an error. Kia Wilson followed and also reached on an error. Adalyn Swails was the third straight Lady Trojan to get on base via a Veterans’ miscue; the error scored Spikes and Wilson to tie the game at five. A bunt moved Swails to third. Douglas followed with a single that scored Swails for the go-ahead run that ended up winning the game.
Douglas was the only Lady Trojan with multiple hits; she was 2-3 with an RBI. Spikes had Coffee’s only extra-base hit, an RBI triple.
The Lady Trojans came out swinging in game two, scoring eight in the bottom of the first. They added one in the second, one in the first, and two in the fourth to end the game via run rule.
In the bottom of the fourth, Wilson led off with a single. After a bunt and a strikeout, Douglas hit the first pitch she saw out to right for a two-run home run for Coffee’s mercy-rule invoking 12th run of the game.
Douglas was 4-4 with four runs scored and three RBI. Maggie Brown had two hits and two RBI. Wilson had two hits and scored twice. Joceyln Fender also drove in two.
Brown threw a four-inning complete-game shutout, allowing three hits while striking out seven to one walk.
Coffee is now 13-7 this season and 10-3 against region opponents. The Lady Trojans have region games against Lee County and Thomas County Central remaining. Tuesday, Lee County comes to Faircloth Field for one game. Thursday, the two teams face each other again for a doubleheader in Leesburg. The Lady Trojans are #2 in the region standings behind 12-1 Lee County but are #11 in the GHSA’s postseason rankings. Lee County is #3 and Houston County is #9. The top 16 teams in the PSR host first-round playoff games. The wins over Veterans moved Coffee up nine spots in the PSR.
