A Douglas police officer arrested an allegedly unlicensed driver after a hit and run accident that occurred late last month at the intersection of East Ward Street and Southeast Bowens Mill Road.
According to the incident report, a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Lyndon Russell Rowell of Alma was at the red light facing east. A 2001 Ford Econoline driven by Hugo Jeronimo Oxlajitzep of Douglas was on the opposite side of the intersection facing west.
The report says that the light turned green and Rowell began to move. As he was nearly through the intersection, according to the report, Oxlajitzep pulled in front of him and they collided.
The vehicles pulled off the side of the road to assess the damage. Oxlajitzep asked if everyone was ok and then left the scene, according to the report. Another driver at the intersection corroborated Rowell’s account.
Officers located Oxlajitzep on East Baker Highway and charged him with failure to obey traffic control devices, driving without a license, and hit and run. He was booked into the Coffee County Jail and later released.
