Wiregrass Georgia Technical College hosted its Virtual Reality & Heavy Equipment Summer Camp June 8-11 on the Ben Hill-Irwin Campus, providing 10 students ages 11-16 with an exciting opportunity to explore high-demand careers through immersive technology and hands-on experiences.
Designed to introduce young people to a variety of career pathways, the camp combined cutting-edge virtual reality technology with real-world equipment operation to create an engaging and educational experience. Throughout the week, campers explored careers in healthcare, welding, HVAC, and other skilled trades using state-of-the-art virtual reality headsets and curriculum. The immersive simulations allowed students to step into career environments, complete job-related tasks, and gain a better understanding of the skills required in each field.
In addition to career exploration through virtual reality, campers received hands-on experience with the Caterpillar motor grader simulator, where they learned the basics of heavy equipment operation in a safe, controlled environment. Students ages 14 and older further expanded their knowledge through introductory operation and maintenance activities involving a mini-excavator and backhoe. These experiences provided valuable insight into careers within construction, transportation, and heavy equipment industries.
The camp encouraged students to think about their future goals while building confidence, problem-solving skills, and an appreciation for the many career opportunities available through technical education. By exposing students to both emerging technologies and hands-on learning, Wiregrass continues to create pathways for career exploration at an early age.
“This camp was about more than operating equipment or using virtual reality headsets—it was about helping students envision their future,” said Michael Williams, Executive Vice President of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College. “By introducing young people to careers in healthcare, skilled trades, and heavy equipment operations, we are helping them build awareness of the many pathways available to them after high school.”
Wiregrass Georgia Technical College offers a variety of summer camps each year designed to help students explore career options, discover new interests, and gain exposure to in-demand industries that can shape their future educational and career goals. These camps provide students with opportunities to learn from industry professionals, experience college environments, and develop skills that can help guide future educational and career decisions.
