Friday afternoon, the CCA Lady Patriots defeated the Fullington Academy Lady Trojans 9-3 on a neutral field in Cordele. Monday, the Lady Patriots traveled to Pinehurst for a rematch at Fullington.
The outcome was decidedly different.
The Lady Trojans handed the Lady Patriots their first loss of the season in walk-off fashion, winning 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh.
CCA jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third. Fullington answered with two in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Patriots scored one run each in the fourth and fifth to take a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Abby Mixon led off for Fullington and reached on an error. A strikeout and a pop out gave CCA a little breathing room. The tying run was on base but the Lady Patriots had two outs.
Then Mixon advanced to second on a passed ball. Madalyn Thomas walked to put runners at first and second. Another walk loaded the bases, setting the stage for Aubrey Thompson. She hit the first pitch she saw into center for a single, scoring Mixon and Thomas for the walk-off win.
Of the seven total runs scored in the game, only one was earned; CCA (3) and Fullington (4) committed a total of seven errors.
The Lady Patriots managed just one hit, a single by Emma Gourley. She also had an RBI. Brilynn Waldron, Mattie Lewis, and Arabelle Roberts scored CCA’s runs.
Peighton Harper and Shanley Meeks pitched for the Lady Patriots. Harper started and went four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits. She struck out four and walked two. Meeks went 2 2/3 innings, surrendering two runs, neither of which was earned, on one hit. She struck out two and walked four.
CCA is now 4-1 on the season and hosts the Tiftarea Lady Panthers Tuesday in the Lady Patriots’ home opener. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
