The Douglas-Coffee County Parks and Recreation Department is offering many programs to help children learn and grow during the summer break.
Young people with an interest in art are sure to enjoy the ceramics classes offered by Cindy Johnson. Ms. Johnson is a lifelong Douglas resident and has been with the parks and recreation department since 1979. She has been a ceramics instructor since 1983 and gives to her students a wealth of knowledge and experience. Classes for children aged six to eight are Wednesday afternoons, 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., throughout the month of June. Classes for those aged nine years and older are on Tuesdays in June at the same times. The fee for a month of expert instruction is only $40 and spaces for the older students are limited so interested parties should take action soon.
Of particular interest is the Camp Cool program. This program is offered to young people between the ages of six and twelve and starts June 5. It continues for the rest of the month, Monday through Thursday, from 10am until 2pm. The cost is $70 per week. They must bring a lunch and snack, but they are treated to a movie screening. The weeks of June 19-22 and 26-29 will see the children going on field trips to Summer Waves and to see a play at Valdosta State University, respectively. The camp is held at Suite 200-E of Central Square Complex.
Also worthy of consideration is the Big Art art camp for children aged six to twelve. It takes place from July 17 through July 28. There will also be a cheer camp for children ages six and older hosted by Mia Jordan from June 19 through June 22. Ms. Jordan will also instruct children of the same age in a dance camp to be held June 12 through June 15.
Any parents wishing to learn more about the above programs can contact Landy Gomez at (912) 384-5978.
Another notable – and free – program is the basketball camp for kids aged nine to thirteen years. The camp will run from Monday, July 17 through Thursday, July 20, between the times of 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m in the Central Square Complex Gym B. This service is provided to the community by the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Interested parties should contact E.W. Dempsey at (423) 667-5420.
