Dr. Ruth Ellen Porter has been named the Department Chair for the Humanities Division at South Georgia State College.

Originally from Virginia, Dr. Porter comes most recently from Jacksonville State University in Alabama where she served as the Director of Academic Services. Dr. Porter has served as both teaching faculty and administrator with several institutions.  She is eager to get back to her roots as a Division Chair for the Humanities, which is how she began her administrative career more than 20 years ago.

Dr. Porter plans to utilize her past experiences in both administration and the classroom to move forward with the mission of SGSC to provide high-quality education for all of its students, those earning Associate degrees as well as those in the new Bachelor degrees.

“I want to help the Humanities Division reach its fullest potential. I see many opportunities for growth and development,” said Dr. Porter. Her career has come full circle, and “coming back to the Humanities Division and South Georgia feels like coming home.”

SGSC President Dr. Virginia Carson is excited to have someone of Dr. Porter’s caliber here as well. “Dr. Porter has an array of talents, abilities, and experiences that will serve the college well. I’m looking forward to see what she will accomplish in her time with us,” states Dr. Carson.

Dr. Porter has a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as a master’s degree in English writing from Hollins University. She and her husband now reside near Douglas. Dr. Porter has two adult children and two grandchildren, all of whom live in Virginia.
