A Douglas man survived a gunshot wound to the head from a high-powered rifle on July 31. A couple of days later, a person of interest in the shooting was arrested and jailed on traffic violations after he was also a target of a shooting, this time in the county.
The 911 call initially came in as a vehicle v. light pole accident on Spooner Road near Irma Avenue. There was also a second call about possible gunshots near Spooner Road and Spooner Court.
According to a report from the Douglas Police Department, an officer responded to the call and saw a black Ford F-150 pickup that had crashed into a light pole. The report states that the truck had bullet holes in the windshield. Keevon Bussey, 25, was covered in blood and staggering around the vehicle, according to the report. Bussey was bleeding profusely from his head and face.
Paramedics arrived and placed Bussey in an ambulance. When he was in the ambulance, he said that he had been shot. The report states that there was a gunshot wound in his head near his hairline and there appeared to be a bullet under the skin on his right cheek.
Bussey was transported to Coffee Regional Medical Center where he he was flown via AirEvac to a trauma center in Jacksonville, Fla. His injuries, though serious, were not life-threatening. Officers recovered several 5.56/.223 shell casings from the scene.
No arrests have been made in the shooting. However, a person interest in the incident, Dejon “Da-Da” Fussell, 22, was the target of a shooting in the county a couple of days later. According to reports, individuals shot his vehicle, which resulted in him crashing as well. As a result of that accident, Fussell, who was not hit by gunfire, was charged with DUI-alcohol, no proof of insurance, failure to maintain lane, seatbelt violation, driving with a suspended license, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
He was transported to the Coffee County Jail, where he remains.
