Governor’s Office of Highway Safety awards grant to SGSC Submitted Photo

South Georgia State College is pleased to announce it has received a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) through its Georgia Young Adult Program (GYAP).

The grant will help finance SGSC’s effort to carry out the mission of the GYAP “to promote education and awareness to young adults about highway safety issues, such as underage drinking, impaired driving, destructive decisions, and other high-risk behaviors in order to decrease crashes, injuries and fatalities in young adult drivers.”

“The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is committed to keeping everyone safe on our roads and highways, from the smallest precious cargo to the most seasoned drivers,” said GOHS Director Harris Blackwood. The grant provided to SGSC will help to do just that.

A portion of the funds from the grant was used to purchase a DUI simulator, which was used during SGSC’s Week of Welcome’s Wellness Fair to bring awareness to the dangers of drunk driving. Students took turns trying out the contraption and discovered how difficult it is to make the correct driving choices when drunk or impaired.

The GYAP helps colleges across Georgia educate their students about pertinent issues facing college students through peer education on the detriments to drinking and driving and other components of alcohol misuse.
