Hannah Higginson, a South Georgia State College (SGSC) junior from Blackshear, was awarded the 2019 Academic Recognition Day Award by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
Higginson, a Phi Theta Kappa honor student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, plans to maintain a 4.0 GPA and pursue a career that allows her to use the degree to do what she loves and help others. “I decided on a business path because I am attracted to the diversity of pathways it will allow me to pursue while using what I’ve learned,” says Higginson. “Several of my family members work in the business world, including my dad, a financial advisor, and my grandad, a certified public accountant.”
In addition to attending college, Higginson is making wedding plans. She and Cole Crosby will be married next month. “I am so thankful to God for an amazing support system, full of family and friends who encourage me to give my best, because without them I would not be who I am today,” she says. “My parents, Will and Delisa Higginson, have always encouraged me academically to do my best and pursue what I love.”
The University System of Georgia Academic Recognition Day Award is presented to the student who exemplifies outstanding academic achievement and success. “Receiving this award was such an honor. I know there are so many deserving students at SGSC, and I am humbled to have been chosen as recipient,” explains Higginson.
"I am very proud of Hannah and her academic accomplishments. However, what impressed me the most about her was the passion for her academic and professional pursuits,” says SGSC President Dr. Ingrid Thompson-Sellers. “Hannah will continue to make a difference because she is focused and driven, and I look forward to hearing and telling her story in the future."
Higginson was honored by University System of Georgia Chancellor Steve Wrigley, the Board of Regents, the Georgia House of Representatives, and the Georgia Senate on Academic Recognition Day on February 12, 2019. Her father, Will Higginson, attended the ceremony along with SGSC President Dr. Ingrid Thompson-Sellers and SGSC Dean of Students Dr. Greg Tanner.
