AgSouth contributes $15,000 to South Carolina and Georgia USDA food initiatives

AgSouth Farm Credit announced they will contribute $15,000 in total to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) divisions in South Carolina and Georgia in light of the effects of COVID-19 on the agriculture and farming communities.

Of that total, $7,500 will go towards the partnership between Certified SC Grown and SC Advocates for Ag organizations and their ongoing efforts to support their Farmer to Food Banks initiative.

“Farmers to Food Banks solves two problems with one charitable effort: helping the needy while supporting the South Carolina farmers who work hard to feed us all,” said South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers, who serves as an advisor to South Carolina Advocates for Agriculture. “People want to lend a hand during these difficult times, and this is one simple way they can do so.  South Carolina Advocates for Agriculture appreciates AgSouth Farm Credit’s participation and its commitment to South Carolina agriculture.”

Another $7,500 will go towards Georgia Grown, a USDA division in Georgia, and their continuing efforts to ensure that consumers have easy access to fresh foods and that farmers have avenues available to them to get their products to market more quickly.

“Farmers and consumers each have needs,” said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black. “Perhaps the greatest discovery of the pandemic experience is their immediate need of each other. AgSouth’s leadership brings the two together in a special way.”
