The City of Douglas has had a curfew ordinance in effect for many years but many young people and their parents/guardians are not familiar with these laws. “It is the desire of the City of Douglas to remind some, while educating others, the hours that young people, under the age of 18 can legally be in a public place without being under the supervision of a parent or guardian”, says City Manager, Terrell Jacobs. The curfew hours are midnight to 6 a.m. Minors are not supposed to be out during these hours without the company of a parent of guardian.

During a regular City Commission meeting on June 12, Jacobs briefed Mayor and Commission on the plans of the Douglas Police Department to tighten up on patrolling minors being out past curfew time. The City urges parents, guardians, and even minors to become familiar with the local ordinance and federal Joshua’s Law.

To avoid citations for failing to ensure that children are in compliance with the curfew laws, parents and guardians should do their due diligence and be accountable to the whereabouts of their child at all times or to accompany the child in public, past the curfew hours.
