Coffee running back Tywone Brewton scores the first of his two touchdowns in Friday night's win over the South Effingham Mustangs. Robert Preston, Jr./DouglasNow.com Coffee running back Tywone Brewton scores the first of his two touchdowns in Friday night's win over the South Effingham Mustangs.

There were certainly some tense moments during the Coffee Trojans’ 34-22 win over the South Effingham Mustangs Friday night. At halftime, the Trojans held on to a slim 14-7 lead. With about five minutes left in the game, Coffee was ahead by five points with South Effingham across midfield and driving. The Mustangs were moving the ball seemingly at will, with Coffee offering little resistance to a surprisingly effective South Effingham passing attack. However, an incompletion on a big 4th and 6 with the Mustangs in Trojan territory gave Coffee the ball and, for all practical purposes, the win.

“We knew coming in that South Effingham had a great offense and defense. They hadn’t lost yet and we knew it would be a tough game. We stepped up when we had to. When they scored, we did a good job of answering. I was really proud of the way our guys played tonight,” said Coffee head coach Robby Pruitt after the big region win.

The Trojans scored on their first possession when sophomore running back Tywone Brewton capped an 80-yard drive with a 14 yard scamper into the end zone. The point after, which has been a question mark all season long, was good and Coffee had a 7-0 advantage with 7:50 left in the first quarter. Late in the second quarter, Brewton scored again, this time on an 11 yard run with 4:16 left in the half. Another good extra point gave Coffee a 14-0 lead. South Effingham added a touchdown with 43 seconds left in the half to narrow the lead to 14-7 at halftime.

The Trojans never relinquished their lead in the second half, though the Mustangs did get within five points late in the game. Midway through the third quarter, the sluggish Coffee offense electrified the crowd when quarterback Max Hughes connected with Tray Bryant for a 73-yard touchdown to put Coffee up 21-7. The Mustangs answered on their next possession with a touchdown and a two-point conversion to pull within six. Coffee scored on the ensuing drive when running back Demetrius Davis ran in from 11 yards out. The Trojans went for two but were unsuccessful. With 10:18 left in the game, Coffee was up 27-15. Once again, the Mustangs struck with a touchdown of their own to get within five points. Coffee stalled on its next drive, which gave South Effingham a chance to take the lead. The Mustangs were driving in Coffee territory when the Trojan defense stood up and stopped South Effingham’s progress. The Trojans made the most of the opportunity and scored again, this time on six yard run by Jeremiah Ashley. With 1:46 left in the game, the Trojans could breathe easier; they were up 34-22. Neither team scored again and the clock expired with Coffee up by 12.

“This is a tough region. You’ve got three or four teams that can beat anybody. This game here was a big one. And we’ve got another big one next week in Brunswick,” said Coach Pruitt. The Trojans are now 6-1 overall and 4-1 in region play.

Here are few notes from Friday night:

Senior defensive back JcKenzie Walker suffered a broken leg in the third quarter on a play near the south end zone and was taken to Coffee Regional Medical Center by ambulance. He will be out for the remainder of the season. “It’s terrible to see that happen to a kid like JcKenzie. You never want to see a player get hurt. JcKenzie is our leader and he’s one of the few tall, fast kids we have. That’s going to be a big loss,” said Coach Pruitt.

  • Special teams have been a thorn in Coffee’s side all year long. Friday, the Trojans’ kickers made every extra point. Coffee missed just one point-after, a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter. Marquavious Jefferson blocked a South Effingham field goal as well. Kickoff coverage was poor and, as a result, the Mustangs started several drives with great field position. But the Coffee defense stood tall and kept the Mustangs at bay.

  • Ware County lost to Glynn Academy, which throws a kink, albeit a good one, in the region standings.

  • Jeremiah Ashley again proved to be a spark the Coffee offense needed. He had several good runs, including a 40 yarder that set up a Trojan touchdown. He also scored a touchdown of his own.

  • There was one turnover in the game; senior safety Kavion Tyson stopped the Mustangs’ final drive with a big interception that he returned to the South Effingham 30. Coffee then ran out the clock for the win.
