The South Georgia State College Hawks overcame a slow start in their season opener Monday night to cruise to a 95-57 win over the Middle Georgia Prep Lions.

Jovante’ Spivey led the Hawks (1-0) with 21 points, six assists, and three steals.  Demontrez Austin had a career-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Lions kept things interesting throughout the first half, cutting SGSC’s lead to one point multiple times.  The Hawks extended their lead to 11 points at halftime and blew the game open on a 22-5 run in the first ten minutes of the second half.

“We started out slow in the first half,” said head coach Cory Baldwin.  “(Jovante’) Spivey and (Demontrez) Austin kept us in it.  We got our press going in the second half, which gave us some breathing room.”

The Hawks travel to Webber International University Wednesday to play Webber’s junior varsity team.  They return home for a four-game homestand starting Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Summer Hill Post Graduate Academy.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
