The CCA Lady Patriots remain unbeaten after defeating the St. Andrew’s Lions 20-0 and the First Preparatory Highlanders 12-7 in Savannah Tuesday afternoon. The game against First Preparatory came down to CCA’s last possession when, trailing 7-6, Arabelle Roberts threw a touchdown pass to Bristol Barrs to take a 12-7 lead late in the game.
In game one, quarterback Klair Mercer was nine of 13 passing for 96 yards and three touchdowns. She threw a pair of touchdown passes to Barrs and another to Roberts. Barrs also caught two one-point conversion passes.
Lily Waldron led the rushing attack with five carries for 17 yards. Roberts had 12 yards on her only carry.
Jayla Shrouder led the defense with seven flag pulls, four of which were for a loss. Roberts had six (two for loss) and Barrs tallied five (one for a loss).
The excitement came during game two. Early in the second quarter, the Lady Patriots took a 6-0 lead on a six-yard run by Roberts. The conversion was no good. At the 8:44 mark of the fourth quarter, the Highlanders scored and made the conversion for a 7-6 lead.
With 1:56 left in the game, CCA got the ball on their own 14 and launched a drive that featured 43 rushing yards by Roberts and 17 more from Mercer. On third and goal from the six, Roberts took the direct snap and rolled to her left. Expecting her to keep the ball, First Preparatory abandoned any semblance of pass coverage, leaving Barrs wide open. Roberts threw to Barrs for the go-ahead touchdown. The conversion was again no good but the Lady Patriots had the lead.
On the ensuing drive, CCA’s defense stiffened and held the Highlanders on fourth down. The Lady Patriots got the ball back with 35 seconds left and ran out the clock for the win.
Mercer completed five of 12 passes for 36 yards and an interception. Roberts was 1-1 passing for six yards and a score. Roberts also ran for 71 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown. Waldron rushed for 31 yards on six carries while Mercer amassed 19 yards on four carries. Reese Coram caught two passes for 13 yards while Barrs had two catches for 12 yards and a score.
Barrs had 10 flag pulls and a sack. Roberts pulled five flags, knocked down two passes, and had one interception.
