The two games the CCA Lady Patriots played Saturday in Cordele should have spanned 14 innings. They took nine.
The Lady Patriots defeated Westfield 11-3 in five innings Saturday morning. They came back that afternoon and bested Brookwood 14-1 in four innings.
Against Westfield, the Lady Patriots scored in every inning but the first. They plated four in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth, and two in the fifth to win via run rule. Two Lady Patriots homered in the game – Arabelle Roberts circled the bases for a legitimate inside-the-park home run in the second inning after sending one over the right fielder’s head while Emma Gourley hit a two-run shot in the third.
Maci Rucker and Roberts were each 3-3 with three runs. Peighton Harper and Gourley had two hits each. Roberts drove in three (there will be more on what has been a historic run by Roberts a few paragraphs down).
Harper (4 1/3 innings) and Shanley Meeks (2/3 of an inning) shared the pitching duties. Harper picked up the win.
It was more of the same against Brookwood. CCA scored in every inning with the second and fourth being the most productive; the Lady Patriots scored five in each of those innings.
Allie Veal, Gourley, and Meeks each had two hits. Both of Gourley’s hits went for extra bases (a double and a triple). Gourley, Veal, Klair Mercer, and the Rucker sisters – Madi and Maci – scored twice.
Meeks (three innings) and Veal (one inning) stepped into the circle for CCA. The two pitchers combined for a two-hitter.
The Lady Patriots have played four games this season and thus far are undefeated. During these first four games, Roberts, CCA’s left fielder, has been on a historic run. She is a perfect 9-9 with a home run, nine RBI, seven runs, two walks, and a sacrifice bunt.
The Lady Patriots get a day off then return to the field Monday at Fullington. Tuesday, Tiftarea comes to town for a 6:30 p.m. game for CCA’s home opener.
