The Coffee Lady Trojans launched a comeback bid in the top of the seventh inning on Tuesday against the Veterans Warhawks in Kathleen. Unfortunately, the rally fizzled after Coffee cut Veterans’ four-run lead in half.
The Warhawks jumped out to an early 8-4 lead after scoring in each of the first three innings. Veterans plated three in the first, four in the second, and one in the third. The Lady Trojans responded with four in the second but didn’t add to their run total until the top of the seventh.
Coffee was trailing 8-4 with two outs when the Lady Trojans started showing signs of life. Ella Edge reached on an infield single then scored on a Jocelyn Fender double. Allie Pridgen singled to center, scoring Fender in the process and bringing the tying run to the plate in Maggie Brown. She also reached first safely on an infield hit, which put the tying run on base and the potential go-ahead run at the plate. Unfortunately for Coffee, Veterans pitcher Caidence Scott coerced a strikeout to end the threat and the game.
The top of the order led the Lady Trojans offensively. Kanlee Douglas, Edge, Fender, and Brown had two hits each. Fender and Brown doubled for Coffee’s only extra base hits.
Brown started and had a tough two-inning outing. She allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits. She struck out two and didn’t walk anyone. Douglas threw the final four innings and fared better; she allowed one run on four hits and also struck out two to zero walks.
The Lady Trojans are 11-7 overall and 8-3 in region play. They are currently fourth in the region and #20 in the GHSA’s PSR – well within the playoff hunt but a few spots outside of hosting a postseason game. Coffee has 13 games remaining.
