The last time the Coffee Trojans played in a quagmire at Jardine Stadium, they dominated, defeating the Ware County Gators 27-7 on August 28. Things didn’t go the same way the second time around in the slop.
Friday night, the Lee County Trojans defeated Coffee 15-6 on another wet and nasty night.
Coffee committed two costly turnovers early in the that proved to be the difference. Those turnovers also proved to be the only points the high-powered Lee County offense could muster.
Lee took the opening kick but couldn’t do anything and lined up to punt. They ended up attempting a fake that failed spectacularly. Jamien Mack made the stop, which gave Coffee the ball at the Lee 45. A few plays into the drive, Coffee fumbled. Trey Bush picked up the loose ball and ran 60 yards for the score. Lee went for two, which Jordan Bush converted for an 8-0 lead with 7:57 left in the first quarter.
Coffee started its next drive at its own 24. This time, on the first play, Coffee fumbled again. Lee’s Jaden Upshaw recovered at the Coffee 18. The drive ended with a four-yard score by Jordan Bush. Lee kicked the extra point for a 15-0 lead with 4:37 remaining in the first quarter.
Those are all the points Lee would score.
Coffee, meanwhile, didn’t get on the board until the midway point of the third quarter. Coffee took the opening kick of the second half and saw its drive stall. Coffee opted to punt but a big personal foul penalty gave the home team new life. On the very next play, Bobby Reynolds ripped off a 48-yard run that gave Coffee a much-needed spark. Xavien Littleton eventually scored his 16th touchdown of the season on a one-yard run. Coffee opted for a two-point conversion but didn’t make it, leaving the score 15-6 with at the 8:33 mark of the third quarter.
For the next 20 minutes or so, the two sets of Trojans battered each other but neither one could find the end zone.
Coffee ended up with the ball on its fifth drive with 4:37 remaining in the game. The Tommy Stanley-led offense played with a renewed sense of urgency and even took to the air. A big completion to Camron Carswell followed by a pass interference call against Lee moved the ball to the Lee 19. With 1:15 left in the game, KJ Johnson forced another Coffee fumble, which got kicked around until Lee fell on the ball at the Lee 47 for a 28-yard loss. Lee ran one play then fell into the victory formation for the 15-6 win.
Coffee is now 5-1 overall and 1-1 in region play. They are off next week then they host the Houston County Bears on October 16 at 7:30 p.m.
