Myrtle L. Smith, age 87, of Douglas, Georgia, passed away on August 27, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Myrtle was born on November 13, 1938, in Douglas, Georgia, to Ira (Buddy) Lott and Lois Lott. She spent her life devoted to her family and the people she loved.
Myrtle was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her family was an important part of her life, and the memories they shared with her will continue to be cherished for generations.
She is survived by her children, Donna Smeltzer and Vicki Jones (Tommy); grandchildren, Brandi West (Patrick), Katie Smeltzer, Kevin Jones, and Kristen Veal (Ashley); great-grandchildren, Madisyn Rucker, Maci Rucker, Allie Veal, Dallas West, Jase Veal, and Jett West; brother, Ronnie Lott (Quinette); and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, W.C. Smith; sister, Janice Cook; and brother, Ovid Lott.
Myrtle spent her childhood in Broxton, GA, and later made her home in Douglas. She retired from SunTrust Bank in 1997 after many years of dedicated service. She attended banking classes at LSU and was proud to be among the first women in banking in Douglas, paving the way for others through her determination and strong work ethic. Myrtle began her banking career at entry level and, through years of dedication, determination, and hard work, rose through the ranks to become vice president of the bank. Her accomplishments were a testament to her perseverance and the strong work ethic she carried throughout her life.
Myrtle’s life was one filled with family, faith, love, and strong work ethic. Those who knew and loved her knew her love and talent for crafting and sewing. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in her heart; she treasured the time spent making memories with them. Her love, wisdom, and the memories she created with her family will continue to live in the hearts of those who knew her. Her love for her family and the memories she created with them will remain a lasting part of her legacy.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 31st, at Sims Chapel, with Casey Wright officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation prior to service. Interment will follow at Rocky Pond Cemetery.
