The CCA baseball team rallied around its seniors on Monday night, defeating the Deerfield-Windsor Knights 13-3 in six innings on Senior Night. The Knights are the #2-ranked team in GIAA Class 3A.
Starter Thomas Gentry had a strong outing in what is likely his last appearance on the mound before the playoffs begin. He threw a complete game two-hitter, giving up three runs (all earned), striking out 10 and walking one. He was also responsible for a pretty good portion of the Patriot offense, going 3-3 with a double and three RBI.
The two teams were fairly quiet for the first three innings. Then CCA kicked down the doors with a nine-run third inning. Deerfield-Windsor plated three in the fifth but the Patriots came back with one in the fifth and three in the sixth to end the game via run rule.
Skyler Woods, Clay Phillips, Jackson Knight, Jonah Hall, and Luke Russ each had two hits. Both of Russ’s hits were doubles. Russ also drove in three. Phillips, Knight, and Russ each scored twice.
Monday’s game against the Knights was supposed to be the regular season finale. However, the Patriots and the Valwood Valiants have agreed to a neutral site game Thursday afternoon. The two teams will face off in Valdosta at the Billy Grant Field at Thomas Park – the home of the Valdosta State Blazers.
The #1-ranked Patriots have a first-round bye in the state playoffs. Their first game will be Friday, May 15, at Patriot Field in Douglas against the winner of the First Preparatory Christian Academy and Covenant Academy game. CCA is 24-2 on the season.
