Charleston Southern’s Hancock nabs second interception, Tulane’s Turner returns to action

Last Saturday, Charleston Southern defensive back Jayden Hancock nabbed the second interception of his college football career and Tulane running back Maurice Turner returned to action following an ankle injury.

Hancock, a true freshman, has had a solid season for the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. He picked off his first pass early in the season then intercepted another Saturday in the Bucs’ 29-24 win at Western Illinois. He also recorded three tackles and one pass breakup. Teammate Anthony Paulk also had three tackles and a tackle for a loss.

In the Big Easy, Turner was finally able to get back into game action after getting over an ankle injury that has plagued him since Week 2. The Green Wave defeated Army 24-17 in New Orleans. Turner had six carries for 29 yards (4.8 yards per carry) with a long of eight yards. Four running backs shared the ball-carrying duties against Army; only Jake Retzloff had a better yards per carry average (7.8) than Turner.

At Western Carolina, Catamounts defensive lineman Jackson Banks recorded two tackles, a half tackle for a loss, and half a sack in Western Carolina’s 45-38 win at The Citadel.

University of West Georgia freshman linebacker Jyarius Carter continued to do what he’s been doing all year long. Saturday’s game at Tarleton State didn’t go as well as West Georgia would have liked – they were on the wrong end of a 45-10 tilt – but Carter had a solid game. He finished with three tackles.

Georgia Military rolled over Andrew College 63-17 in Cuthbert and running back Tyrese Woodgett was in middle of the offensive action. His rushing numbers were down a bit last week – just 37 yards on 15 carries – but he caught a 49-yard touchdown pass. Woodgett now has 11 touchdowns on the season – eight rushing and three receiving. Offensive linemen Kyler Smith and Jerzabeon Grant were right there in the game with him.

Clark Atlanta lineman/long snapper Jaydon Vester has played in every game this season and recorded two tackles, both of which came against Albany State on October 11. Last week, Clark Atlanta lost 27-20 to Miles.

  • Anthony Paulk nabs his first interception against Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles

Anthony Paulk nabs his first interception against Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles

Charleston Southern Buccaneers defensive back Anthony Paulk had what may be his best game of the year last Saturday against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. Paulk, who has been very good in the Bucs’ secondary all year, grabbed the first interception of his career on Saturday. He also recorded two tackles and forced a fumble. Teammate and fellow Coffee High alum Jayden Hancock also played but did not record a tackle. Tennessee Tech won 27-13.

Western Carolina defensive lineman Jackson Banks played in the Catamounts’ 52-7 win over Furman but did not record a tackle.

Georgia Military College was off last Saturday.

Tulane running back Maurice Turner saw the field last Thursday against East Carolina but did not get a carry. Turner had a great game in the season opener against Northwestern on August 30 but suffered an ankle injury and did not play again until September 27 at Tulsa. Tulane is 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the AAC. The Green Wave are sitting in fourth place.

  • Woodgett rushes for 218 yards in GMC’s 84-12 win on Saturday, other former Trojans also perform well across college football

Woodgett rushes for 218 yards in GMC’s 84-12 win on Saturday, other former Trojans also perform well across college football

Georgia Military College running back and former Coffee Trojan Tyrese Woodgett has been flirting with a breakout game since he joined the Bulldogs’ roster this year. Saturday, it happened. A week after scoring 94 points against Community Christian College, the Bulldogs defeated the Sussex County Community College Skylanders 84-12 in Milledgeville.

And Woodgett was a big reason why.

Woodgett has been a part of GMC’s 2025 campaign but he hasn’t had a day like he did on Saturday. The freshman rushed for 218 yards on 11 carries – a 19.8 yard per carry average – with three touchdowns. His longest run was 90 yards. He also caught two passes for 57 yards and another touchdown, with a long of 54 yards. Those were the two longest plays from scrimmage for GMC.

Kicker Tug Vaughn, another former Trojan, was a perfect 10 out of 10 on extra points (Oisin Matthews made the other two extra points). He also amassed 705 yards on 11 kickoffs with three touchbacks.

Up front, Kyler Smith and Jerzabeon Grant continued to plow their way through the defense, opening up holes for Woodgett and the rest of the Bulldogs’ offense.

GMC is 3-1 overall with a 1-0 conference record.

While the Coffee graduates at Georgia Military are having great seasons, they aren’t the only ones who are doing well. Charleston Southern has two Trojans in the secondary – Jayden Hancock and Paulk. Both had a tackle in Charleston Southern’s 35-28 loss to Lindenwood on Saturday. Charleston Southern is still lookin for its first win this year.

West Georgia linebacker Jyarius Carter recorded a tackle in the Wolves’ 35-31 win over East Tennessee State. West Georgia is 3-0 on the season.

Jaydon Vester took the field on Thursday night in the Clark Atlanta Panthers’ 26-21 win over Fort Valley State. That game was televised on ESPN2.

Tulane running back Maurice Turner, the only former Trojan in college football’s FBS, did not play for the second week in a row. Turner has been dealing with an ankle injury though he did dress out for the Green Wave’s game against Duke on Saturday. Coaches are optimistic that Turner will play this weekend against Ole Miss.
