Not everyone is happy about the Georgia High School Association’s new Postseason Rankings (PSR) formula. The Coffee Trojans, however, aren’t among the unhappy. The Trojans, who finished the season 8-2 and in third in Region 2-6A, will host a first-round playoff game next week after defeating the Veterans Warhawks 42-8 in Kathleen Friday night. Under the old system, the Trojans would be traveling for the entirety of the playoffs – most likely heading north for the duration of their postseason run.
Coffee went to Veterans as 35-point favorites. The spread isn’t always right but it was spot on in this case. Coffee jumped out to an early 21-0 lead on three Bobby Reynolds touchdowns.
In the second quarter, a forced fumble by Xavien Littleton that Coffee recovered led to an LJ Devine touchdown and a 28-0 lead. The Trojans extended the lead with 1:42 left in the second quarter when quarterback Tommy Stanley found Tresean Smith for a 55-yard touchdown.
Coffee took a 35-0 lead into halftime.
The Trojans added another score with 4:42 in the third period on a short touchdown run by Devine.
Tylan Glover broke a 70-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter for the Warhawks. Veterans went for two and converted for their only points of the game.
Neither team scored in the final period and Coffee came away with a 42-8 win.
Chris Stinson and Greyson Lott each recovered fumbles for the Trojans. Cristofer Hernandez was a perfect 6-6 on extra points.
Saturday afternoon, the GHSA will announce the 32-team playoff brackets for each classification.
