Four and a half million miles ago – that’s over 39 years and 180 trips around the Earth – Buddy Lee began driving for Walmart Private Fleet. Most of that time has been spent operating out of the Douglas transportation office. Lee reached 4.5 million safe driving miles last week.
Lee’s Walmart career began on February 3, 1987. He says that reaching this milestone wouldn’t be possible without a strong support system at home and at work – as well as staying focused every time climbs into the cab of his truck.
Trucking is a demanding occupation and having a supportive family is key to a long and successful career. “It’s essential to success on the road,” he says. Lee also believes that everyone who has a role in the operation of the truck is also an important cog in the support wheel – from dispatchers to driver managers to mechanics and maintenance technicians.
Four and a half million miles don’t happen by accident. An achievement like that comes from a series of conscious decisions a driver makes every time he or she gets behind the wheel. “You’ve got to keep your mind on the job. Staying focused keeps you safe and protects everyone on the road,” he says.
Buddy has been married to his wife, Dollie, for 38 years. They have a daughter, Nikki, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Outside of work, Buddy enjoys spending time with his family, taking rides with Dollie in their pickup truck, and fishing when he gets the chance.
Walmart operates one of the largest and safest private fleets in the country, with drivers connecting suppliers, distribution centers, stores and clubs across the U.S. The fleet has also been repeatedly recognized by the American Trucking Associations for its safety record.
