The Douglas Lions Club is planning its 15th Annual Big Buck Contest this year to be held on Saturday, October 18, at the Coffee High School Gym.
The event will offer nine grand prizes and hundreds more including 100 guns, tree stands, flat-screen televisions, and tablets valued at over $100,000 during the early bird prize drawing at 6 p.m. and the main event at 8:45 p.m.
Food vendors and a family fun carnival will open at 1 p.m.
Grand prizes and sponsors include: a 2003 Jeep (Crosby of Coffee), a camo golf cart (Mike’s Golf Carts), a Big Green Egg (Southwire), hunting package with a Yeti cooler, Costa del Mar sunglasses and Under Armour clothing (Norris Shoe Store), Bow-Tec bow (Fender-Goggans Orthodontics), Browning BAR rifle (Coley Electric & Plumbing), Holland grill package with propane tanks and fish fryer (Amerigas), Browning Citori 20 gauge shotgun (McCrary-Daniels Insurance), and two-day hunts for two including lunch (Big Papa Outfitters).
The annual charity event helps fund sight conservation projects, scholarships, the Lions Club American flag program, and other donations to local causes such as the $25,000 the club donated to help fund the startup of the Boys and Girls Club.
The contest is open to all hunters and non-hunters. All tickets will be $25 and an evening meal is included. Dinner will be served beginning at 7 p.m.
Ticket purchasers are encouraged to purchase tickets early for a chance to win more prizes. Only 3,500 tickets will be sold this year, and the early bird prize drawing will take place again at 6 p.m.
Early bird prizes valued at around $75 to $100 will be drawn from all tickets that have been purchased and submitted by that time.
Event tickets will continue to be sold until 8:30 p.m., but those purchased after 6 p.m. will only be eligible for the gun prizes and grand prizes. The regular prize drawing for guns and grand prizes will begin at 8:45 p.m. In order to win a prize, the ticket owner does not have to be present, but someone at the contest must be in possession of the winning ticket.
Early bird prize winners will find their names/numbers on the Powerpoint screen in the gym and will be able to pick up their prizes until 9 p.m. that evening at the early bird prize table. Any unclaimed early bird prizes will be returned to the prize table at that point and drawn for again.
After the early bird prize drawing, all tickets will be returned to the ticket drum and will then have the chance to be drawn again for a gun or prize valued at $300 or more. After the second round of prizes are drawn, all tickets will be returned to the ticket drum and will have a chance to win one of the nine grand prizes.
For hunters participating in the Big Buck Contest, tickets must be purchased prior to harvesting a deer. The ticket owner must be the harvester of any deer entered. This year’s contest will once again include archery and primitive weapons season along with rifle season on opening day.
First place awards for the archery, muzzleloader, firearm, and youth (under age 16) divisions will be $500 and second place awards will be $250. In the heaviest doe division, the first place winner will receive $250 and the second place winner will receive $100.
All deer must be presented according to DNR regulations or the deer will be disqualified from the contest. Deer antlers will be scored using Boone and Crockett gross scoring system.
Deer harvested during archery and muzzleloader season must be checked in at Merritt’s Deer Processing located at 2616 Yellow Brick Road in Douglas. Checked deer must have head attached to body. Doe category is for archery and muzzleloader season only. Does will be weighed on field-dressed basis.
On the day of the contest, all bucks and/or antlers should be brought to the Coffee High School gym and presented to contest checkers to be scored. Check-in will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 8:30 p.m.
All state and federal laws and regulations must be met if you are a winner of any gun or any state and/or federally regulated prize. If an individual under 18 years of age wins a state and/or federally regulated prize (such as a gun) a parent or guardian must sign for and meet all state and/or federal laws and regulations.
Tickets are available locally at Crosby of Coffee, Satilla River Outdoors, Norris Shoe Store, Douglas National Bank, First National Bank, Colony Bank, Zaxby’s, the Chamber of Commerce and online at http://www.showclix.com/event/DouglasLionsBigBuck.

Nice read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing some research on that. And he actually bought me lunch as I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch! “A thing is not necessarily true because a man dies for it.” by Oscar Fingall O’Flahertie Wills Wilde.
Very interesting information!Perfect just what I was searching for!
