City approves ordinance for sidewalk cafes

The City of Douglas Mayor and Commissioners have approved a new sidewalk café ordinance for the downtown district. Restaurants located in the downtown district may now apply for a sidewalk café license with the City of Douglas Code Enforcement Office.

On Monday, September 22, the Mayor and City Commission voted to approve Johnny’s New York Style Pizza as a sidewalk café.

“Currently, Johnny’s New York Style Pizza is the only restaurant in the downtown district that has been approved to operate as a sidewalk café,” says Pattie Merritt, Main Street Coordinator. “We anticipate that a few more restaurants will apply for the sidewalk café license. This is a definite plus for restaurants located in the downtown district.”

Sidewalk cafés will only be allowed in the downtown district. Businesses in thedowntown district selling alcoholic beverages on the outside of their building/business must hold a restaurant license and a separate license to operate as a sidewalk café.

Any person desiring to operate a sidewalk café in the downtown district may submit an application to the Community Development Department. For a complete copy of the new ordinance, go to www.cityofdouglas.com and click on ‘Code of Ordinance.’
