The City of Douglas and Transwaste would like to thank everyone who is currently participating in the door-to-door recycling program. The recycling program is available to any person in the city limits of Douglas. City of Douglas residents should call (912) 384-6001 or visit the website at www.cityofdouglas.com/recycling to request a form to participate in the program.

“We encourage our citizens to participate in the recycling program,” says City Manager Terrell Jacobs. “When a citizen requests a recycling cart, it is their responsibility to only place recyclables in the blue cart.  We hope that citizens will take advantage of this service and not contaminate the recycling stream with household garbage.”

Citizens are asked to be mindful of what is placed in the blue recycling cart.  The list of recyclable items include newspapers, magazines, phone books, catalogues, cardboard boxes (all packing material such as styrofoam, bubble wrap, tape, etc. must be removed), food boxes (all interior food-liners and food must be removed), shoe boxes, gift boxes and all boxes of this type, office paper, junk mail, frozen food boxes. Other acceptable items are aluminum beverage cans, steel or tin food cans, aerosol spray cans, and plastic bottles (please remove all lids and empty the container).

For a full listing of recyclables, please visit the website at www.cityofdouglas.com/recycling.

Blue Recycling carts should not contain food products or household garbage.  Recycling carts that are being used as a regular garbage container will no longer be emptied on pick up days.

Recycling carts that are being used to for brown/white good pickup will not be emptied.  Brown/white goods pickup should be scheduled through Transwaste.  The brown/white items should not be placed near the curb for pickup until an appointment has been made. If you are not sure if your item is a brown/white good, please call Transwaste at (912) 384-6001 and they will be able to assist you.

Citizens are also urged to participate in monthly Community Junk Drop-Off Days.  On Junk Drop-Off Days, a dumpster will be placed in an area of Douglas to offer residents a way to dispose of large, non-hazardous items and electronic items at no cost.

Proof of residency is required to drop off items at the designated location. This is for households in the City of Douglas, please no business or commercial dumping.

The next Junk Drop-Off Day will be Saturday, June 20, from 8 a.m. to noon at Eastside Park.

For more information, please call (912) 384-6001, (912)384-3302 or dial 311.
