The staff at Douglas Now was saddened this week to learn of the sudden passing of longtime community leader and advocate Joe Day.
Following is Mr. Day’s obituary courtesy of Sim’s Funeral Home:
Joseph Hayden “Joe” Day age 69 of Douglas, passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
Mr. Day was born on July 17, 1946, in Douglas to the late Henry Hayden Day and Annie Ree Ragsdale Day. Mr. Day was a member of First Baptist Church of Douglas and a deacon. He retired from McCrary-Daniels Insurance Agency.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Tanner Day of Douglas, ; daughter, Laura Day (Steve) Busby of Carrier Mills, IL; three sons, Andrew Hayden (Rianna) Day of Merritt Island, FL, Jonathan Harvey (Lindsay) of Douglas, and Jonathan Kyle Shatto of Douglas, ; sister, Betty Sue Day (Richard) Lanier of Douglas, ; six grandchildren, Alexis Nicole Johnson of Cumming, Elena Grace Day, Clara Drew Day, Samuel Hayden Day, all of Merritt Island, Fl., Adelaide Elise Day and Jake Alexander Day, all of Douglas, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Day Johnson.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 25, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, with Rev. Shep Johnson and Michael W. Harrell officiating. Interment will follow at Douglas City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hope Center and First Baptist Church Men of Acts.
