The Douglas-Coffee County Parks and Recreation Department recently attended the annual GRPA District II Award banquet. Cindy Johnson, City of Douglas Ceramic Coordinator, was nominated and selected by her fellow recreation professionals to receive the inaugural “Roger Johnson Award” in Recreation Administration.

Cindy’s career with the Parks & Recreation Department began in 1979 when she was hired as a part time employee.  In 1980, she was promoted to a full time position as the Public Relations Officer for the department. In 1983, Cindy became the ceramics instructor and presently holds this position.

Cindy works tirelessly to provide ceramics to all people in the community.  Ceramics is offered for all ages throughout the year including night classes, special needs classes, and summer programs.  The Ceramics Division has been the recipient of an Easter Seals Grant that helps to fund programming for underprivileged youth in our area.

“Cindy has touched the lives of countless individuals in our community,” says Stevie Young, newly named Parks & Recreation Director.  “Cindy is deserving of this award not only because she was Roger’s wife, but, also for her dedication to improving the life of others in our community.”

The Roger Johnson Award was created by GRPA’s District II to recognize individuals who have made outstanding and lasting contributions to the recreation administrative aspect of the profession in the second district. The award is based on contributions the member has made to the recreation administration and to life in their community at a state, regional or national level.  This is one of the highest awards the district members can bestow on one of its members.
