Zaquavion Smith’s tip-in with 2.5 seconds left in regulation allowed the South Georgia State College Hawks to escape with a 71-69 win over Faith Baptist Post Graduate Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks (14-3, 1-2) had a six-point lead with one minute left in the game only to see it evaporate in the closing seconds.

“You have to give them (Faith Baptist) credit. They made some big shots late in the game,” said Head Coach Cory Baldwin. “We learned a lot today. We made a couple of mistakes late in the game that we can learn from, and for us to hang on to win like that says a lot.”

Smith was SGSC’s leading scorer with 21 points, five rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots, and two steals. Andre Elam had a double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds, while Tyrone Sam finished with 13 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

The Hawks now enter the meat of their conference schedule. They travel to Swainsboro, Ga. Wednesday to play East Georgia State and will return home Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Central Georgia Tech.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
