The Douglas Stingrays swim team completed the state swim meet last weekend in a close second place finish to Oconee County.
Oconee edged the Stingrays by a mere nine points, 483 to 474. Jefferson City swim team finished third while Tifton finished in fourth place.
“We had two disqualifications in early relay races that cost us 24 points,” commented head coach CM Jenkins. “Those relays and a few higher places here and there could’ve made up the nine point deficit. Other than that we had several state championships in our group of 68 swimmers that attended the meet, which had a lot of events in which they cut time.”
Winning state in both their events were Brent Bell and Emory Mormon. Brent won both of his freestyle events on Friday, while Emory set a new state record in the 50 breaststroke of 28.3 and also won the 100 freestyle. Jon Vickers and Noah Morris won their respective age group’s 25 yard breaststroke on Friday, and the 7-8 year old relay team of Bell, Morris, Mathis McCullough and Mack Lott won both the medley and freestyle team events. Garret Holton and Loren O’Steen joined the top of the podium club by winning the 50 yard fly on Saturday.
