Cory Baldwin could not have asked for a better way to open South Georgia State College’s men’s basketball season. Three players scored 20 or more points, and three school records were broken Wednesday night as the Hawks (1-0) dominated the Martinique National Team in Douglas, 148-29.

Shaquille Williams led the Hawks with 27 points and shot 70 percent from the three-point line. O’Showen Williams finished with 22 points and shot 67 percent from the three-point line. Zaquavian Smith rounded out the top scorers with 20 points.

In addition to breaking the record for most points in a game (148), the Hawks made 23 three-pointers and forced a total of 50 turnovers – both school records.

SGSC set the tone early by jumping out to a 44-11 lead in the first ten minutes of the game. The Hawks led 85-18 at halftime and held Martinique to only 11 points in the second half.

“I knew we were a better shooting team this year, but I never expected this,” said Baldwin. “You really couldn’t have asked for anything more tonight. We know the competition is going to get better as the season progresses, so we’ve got to build on this win.”

The season opener was the only game to be played on SGSC’s Douglas Campus. The Waycross Campus home opener is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. against Middle Georgia Prep.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
