Citizens in Douglas and Coffee County are encouraged to join in a season of giving by participating in the Coffee County Community Toy Drive.  The City of Douglas, along with many local community agencies, are hosting a toy drive for boys and girls ages 12 & under.

“We have approximately 1,000 youth in our community who are on toy lists with local agencies,” says Mayor Tony Paulk.  “So far, we have raised approximately $2,300, which does not include toys that have been donated.  If you do the math, based on money collected, that only provides 230 children with $10 gifts.  We still have a long way to go to reach our goal.  I urge local citizens and businesses to donate a toy or make monetary donation.”

Local businesses and community agencies will have large boxes at their entrances for people to donate new, unwrapped toy for boys and girls.  Local public safety and law enforcement agencies will set up on several dates beginning Nov. 19 through Dec. 15 at area businesses for toy collection.

The Douglas Police and Fire Departments will host two days of collection for toys at Walmart and Kmart November 26 from 2 to 7 p.m. and Dec. 3 from noon to 5 p.m. The Georgia State Patrol will set up on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon at Walmart to accept toy donations and also provide car seat checks for citizens.

CSRA Probation Office and the Broxton Police Department will be set up at the Dollar General in Broxton on Dec. 4 from noon to 4 p.m. for toy collection.  Toys can also be dropped off at the Douglas Police Department, Douglas Fire Department on Cherry Street, and city hall.

Toys collected will be distributed on December 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at Central Square Complex.  Qualifying families will be contacted to participate on toy distribution day.

If a business would rather make a monetary donation for the Coffee County Community Toy Drive, checks should be made payable to: City of Douglas, Memo: Community Toy Drive, 211 S. Gaskin Avenue, Douglas, GA 31533.  All monetary donations collected will be used to purchase gifts for the children.

Persons who are aware of a family or child that is in need of assistance should contact the Douglas Fire Department at 912-384-4815.

Special thanks to Southwire, Georgia State Patrol, CSRA Probation Services, Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas Police Department, Douglas Fire Department, Salvation Army, City of Douglas, City of Broxton, and other community agencies for their contribution to this community event.

To make a donation or to donate a $10 toy, stop by the Douglas Visitor Information Center located at 211 S. Gaskin Avenue no later than December 15, 2016.

For more information, call 912-383-0277 or 912-384-4815.
