The South Georgia State College Hawks overcame a 14-point deficit in the first half Wednesday night and held on to beat the East Georgia State Bobcats 80-74.

The Hawks (14-3, 2-1) were held to 10 points in the first 10 minutes of the game and quickly found themselves trailing 24-10. Reminiscent of earlier games this season, the Hawks generated a 28-12 scoring run to take a 38-36 lead into the locker room. The two teams traded leads in the second half before the Hawks pulled away in the final two minutes.

Four Hawks scored in double digits. O’Showen Williams was the leading scorer with 21 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Zaquavian Smith had 19 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Jordan Young finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Jarred Heard rounded out the top scorers with 10 points, three rebounds, and four assists.

For the game, the Hawks shot 41 percent from the field, made only three three-pointers, and yet shot 76.5 percent from the free throw line on a total of 51 attempts.

“That was a crazy game,” said head coach Cory Baldwin. “It wasn’t our best shooting night. However, we never gave up, and that’s what you’ve got to do in this league if you’re going to be successful.”

The Hawks hit the road for three games before returning home Feb. 1 to play South Georgia Tech. Tip for the game is set for 7 p.m.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
