State 4-H/FFA Livestock Shows
Coffee County 4-H members traveled to Perry to compete in the state livestock shows the week of February 22-26. This week of shows included market hog, steer, heifer, dairy heifers, breeding does, and breeding ewes.
Coffee County 4-H members who participated in the State Heifer Show included: Ambrose: Kramer Day; Junior 4-H Club: Taylor Medders and Callie Willis. Kramer placed first, Taylor placed third, and Callie placed eighth in their respective classes.
In the Breeding Doe Show, participants included Junior 4-H Club: Jonathan Sayer; and Senior 4-H Club: Cole Carver and Austin Fuller. Austin’s does place second and third in weight class, Cole’s placed second and fourth, and Jonathan’s both placed eighth. Austin also placed second in showmanship class and Cole placed sixth. Austin was also in the class to determine Master 4-H Showman and won first place and is now considered a Master 4-H Club member. Congratulations Austin.
The market hog show lasted three days. Thursday was the showmanship classes, Friday the barrow classes, and Saturday the gilt classes. I don’t have the placings from the showmanship classes yet, but here are the placings from the barrow and gilt weight classes.
In the barrow competition, 4-H members who showed were: Ambrose: Kramer Day and Dillon Smith; Broxton: Abby Dockery; CCA: Cameron Kirkland, Kaitlin Kirkland, Emma Morgan; CHS: Anna Grace Grantham; Indian Creek: Jake Grantham and Eli Stodghill. Emma Morgan placed first with her barrow and was also the Division One Reserve Champion. Anna Grace Grantham placed sixth, Abby Dockery placed tenth, and Kaitlin Kirkland placed tenth.
In the gilt competition, 4-H members who showed were: Ambrose: Kramer Day, Walker Hester, Dillon Smith; Broxton: Abby Dockery; CCA: Cameron Kirkland, Kaitlin Kirkland, Emma Morgan, and Kara Morgan; CHS: Anna Grace Grantham; and CMS: Darcy Adams. Placings included Kramer Day with tenth, Abby Dockery with fourth, Cameron Kirkland with first, Emma Morgan with fifth, Kara Morgan with first and fourth, and Dillon Smith with first.
We want to congratulate each and every one of these exhibitors. They did a great job representing Coffee County at the state show and we are very proud of each of them.
Cloverleaf Day Camps
Each summer, in addition to providing the traditional week of summer camp at one of the five 4-H camping facilities, we try to offer a few local day camps for Cloverleaf (4th-6thgraders) 4-H members. This year, we are offering three activities for these students. The first one is called “Fun and Games” and will be held on Monday, June 5th. Cost for the activity is $20 and will include lunch. 4-H members will enjoy playing games, making crafts, cooking and eating delicious recipes, learning how to make and play their own musical instruments, and challenging themselves with puzzles (like the Rubik’s Cube).
The second day will be “A Day at Jekyll” on Tuesday, June 6th. This activity also costs $20 and includes some activities around Jekyll Island including a day at Summer Waves Water Park. Lunch will not be included on this day, so students can either pack a lunch or carry enough money to purchase lunch in the water park.
The third day is “Trip to Savannah” on Wednesday, June 7th. Cost is $30 and includes lunch, a tour of the Ronald McDonald House, a dolphin cruise around Tybee Island, and possibly (if time permits) some shopping time.
Sign up for these activities begins Monday, March 6th, and a deposit of half of the total activity fee is due at sign up. The registration deadline is Friday, March 24th. The balance of the fee is due by Friday, May 12th.
