At the regular August 7, 2017 meeting of the Coffee County Board of Commissioners the board voted to seek funding for the resurfacing of more than 12 miles of roads within the county. The locations to be resurfaced are:

  • Old Pearson Highway from 135 to Atkinson County line (1.55 miles)
  • Basswood Road to Sunbeam Road in Bay Meadows (.67 miles)
  • Kamara Road from Carver Road to the joint in the pavement .315 miles southwest of Carver Road (.315 mile)
  • Old Axson Road to Rebecca Waldron Road (1.9 miles)
  • Racoon Bridge Road to Dewberry Road (1.03 miles)
  • Flying Hawk Road from the bridge to south of Red Bud Road (.35 miles)
  • Danny Kirkland Road from New Forest Road to joint in pavement north of NFR (1.9 miles)
  • Linda Lane from George Deen Road to the dead end (.2 miles)
  • Byrd Road from 206 to the landfill (2.73 miles)
  • Quail Ridge Road from Quail Hollow Road to 206 (.31 miles)
  • Quail Hollow Road from 206 to the dead end (.24 miles)

The construction contract hasn’t been awarded because all the funds for the project are not yet available. The above list of roads will now be submitted to the DOT. This will allow the DOT to award Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant funds to the county in the amount of $1,205,000. The total cost of the project is $1,709,000. With the $92,000 in DOT funds already available taken into account, the Net SPLOST contribution is $412,000. Construction will begin in three to six months and should be completed by Spring of 2018.

Present at the August 7, 2017 work session were officers of Coffee Regional Medical Center. Ms. Vicki Lewis, CEO, Ms. Lavonda Cravey, Controller, and Mr. Bill Phillips, CFO were at the work session along with Mr. Gary Evans, Chairman of the CRMC Board of Directors. They presented the medical center’s annual financial report to the commissioners. Ms. Lewis stressed the medical center’s aggressive recruitment of new physicians. Mr. Phillips mentioned the striking 30 percent increase in uninsured patients from 2016 to 2017. Mr. Phillips spoke with DouglasNow. He said that this increase was due to exchange insurers under the Affordable Care Act pulling out of the county because the insurers were losing too much money.
