Snowmageddon has arrived and she’s brought a number of problems with her

This morning, local residents saw snow on the ground for the first time in many years. It's beautiful to behold but it's causing a lot of problems. And it doesn't appear to be stopping any time soon.

Snowmageddon is living up to its hype. This morning, Coffee Countians woke up to the rarest of sights – snow blanketing cars, homes, trees, and everything else. While the snow makes for pretty scenery, it’s wreaking havoc on roadways, travel plans, and the ability of local businesses to engage in commerce.

Early this morning, DOT crews began doing what they could to keep roads open and safe. Which, given that it snows about once every decade and a half down here, is somewhat limited. The DOT is spreading salt on bridges and encouraging everyone to stay inside unless absolutely necessary. Despite their efforts, some roads and bridges are icing over, creating even more problems.

Already, a number of accidents have taken place throughout the community, most of them minor. If you must travel, drive slowly and cautiously and remember that you can’t see the black ice that is the result of so many accidents. As the day wears on, conditions are expected to worsen and become even more treacherous. Enjoy the snow but please keep travel to a minimum.

In the wake of the winter storm, Gov. Nathan Deal has issued a state of emergency for 28 counties in coastal and southeast Georgia, effective until Friday, Jan. 5. Coffee, Atkinson, and Bacon are among those included. “The state has begun preparations for potential winter weather in the 28 counties, including sending all Georgia Department of Transportation brine trucks and 75 additional plows to the impacted areas,” said Deal. “The emergency declaration ensures all state resources are available if necessary. We will continue monitoring the weather and provide updates as needed. I encourage all Georgians in the potentially impacted areas to stay informed, get prepared and be safe.”
