Robert Tift, age 91, of Douglas, GA passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Vista Park. Mr. Tift was born on February 4, 1927, in Albany, Ga. to the late Samuel Tift and Ona Tift. He was the great grandson of Nelson Tift, the founder of Albany, Georgia.
Mr. Tift attended Albany public schools and then joined the Army at 17 years old and served two years with 13 months in the Philippines. He attended the University of Georgia where he obtained his B.S. degree in forestry in 1950. He worked for three years for the Georgia Forestry Commission and thirty three years for Union Camp Corporation retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Kiwanis Club, Sons of the Confederate Veterans, American Legion and the Card Players. He was also very active member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church serving on the vestry for many years.
He was preceded in death by: his first wife, Virginia Massey Tift; brother, Richard Tift; sister, Susan Tift McGough
Survivors include: his wife, Sara Tift of Douglas, GA; sons: Samuel Tift of Douglas, GA, John Persons III and wife Valerie of Midlothian, VA; step-daughter, Sarolyn Davis of Knoxville, TN; step-son, Andy Davis of Dalton, GA; and several nieces & nephews.
A Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, May 8 2018 at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church where Father John Commins and Rev. Shep Johnson officiated.
Sims Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
