South Georgia State College (SGSC) and the University of North Georgia (UNG) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which will provide the students at SGSC the opportunity to obtain a dual certification degree in elementary education and special education.

Students attending SGSC will be able to complete the four-year UNG Special Education General Curriculum Elementary Education program (P-5) and qualify for teacher certification through the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC). Students graduating from this program will receive a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from SGSC. The program is set to begin at SGSC in the fall of 2019.

“This new education degree will create opportunities for our students and education partners,” says Dr. Ingrid Thompson-Sellers, SGSC President. “Our rural communities will benefit from having more qualified teachers in elementary and special education leading to greater economic impact because of a first class teacher preparation program in our region.”

The MOU is supported by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents, of which both SGSC and UNG are members. GaPSC will work collaboratively with participating institutions to assure the certification of SGSC teacher candidates.

For more information on the program, contact Dr. Robert Page, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, at (912) 260-4203 or email robert.page@sgsc.edu.
