Dec. 28 – Coffee County K-9 units conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near Salem Church Road for a tail light violation. During the stop, consent was gained to search the vehicle, and quantities of methamphetamine and illicit prescription tablets were discovered. The driver, Deana Smithers, was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance.

The Coffee County Drug Unit announces the following recent arrests:

Dec. 28 – K-9 officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of Bowens Mill Road and Highway 158 West on a vehicle suspected of driving under the influence. The driver, identified as Malcolm Cope, appeared to be intoxicated. Officers requested a Georgia state trooper to assist in the detection of impaired driving and, after a brief investigation, Cope was arrested for driving under the influence. Drug paraphernalia was also seen, and a search was conducted that yielded the discovery of a quantity of cocaine. Cope faces additional charges of possession of cocaine and driving under the influence of drugs, along with minor traffic violations.

Jan. 3 – Detectives with the Coffee County Drug Unit conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for failing to obey a traffic sign in the area of Old Bell Lake Road. The vehicle subsequently failed to yield to the blue emergency lights and continued traveling, turning onto Miller Road. Once on Miller Road, the vehicle continued to ignore pursuing detectives. Officers then maneuvered their vehicle in an attempt to stop the vehicle from traveling. Once the vehicles came to a stop, additional units were requested to assist. As officers approached, they could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A search was conducted, and quantities of marijuana were discovered in the driver area and rear passenger area. The driver, identified as Tevin Gainey, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. It was also discovered Gainey was wanted on an outstanding bench warrant for failure to appear for an expired tag violation. Probation violation charges are also pending. The rear passenger, Devountae Campbell, was also arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. Campbell was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for reckless conduct through the Douglas Police Department.

Jan. 3 – Detectives were in the area of Eastside Park when they observed an individual believed to have active arrest warrants. Agents confirmed the status of the warrants and arrested the subject, Jaylen Glaspy. A search incident to arrest was conducted, and quantities of marijuana and ecstasy were discovered. Glaspy was arrested on the outstanding warrants for aggravated assault and simple battery and will also be charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of ecstasy. Glaspy is currently on bond for similar charges, and other charges are pending.
