At home, surrounded by her family Sibyl Plemmons entered into rest Wednesday, January 30, 2019. Wife of Burnett “Buck” Plemmons for sixty- three years and loving mother of daughters Linda Plemmons James and Pamela Annette Plemmons Gosney.

 

Sibyl was a dedicated mother and put her children above all else. She enjoyed spending time with her family and although an excellent cook, loved dining out with friends and family at her favorite area restaurants. The apples of her eye were her three granddaughters. They loved spending time with her and being doted on by their “Mema.” They provided much love, joy and laughter in her later years.

 

Dr. Plemmons was born in Douglas but was a longtime resident and educator in Augusta. She began her teaching career at Atkinson City Elementary School in 1953. Dr. Plemmons was a classroom teacher, media specialist, assistant principal and principal. She taught at several schools throughout Richmond County and finished her career as the principal of Lake Forrest Elementary School. Dr. Plemmons loved her profession and touched the lives of thousands of children through her work. With more than 30 years of service she retired from Richmond County Board of Education in 1995.

 

Dr. Plemmons was president of Richmond County Association of Media Specialists, member of Georgia Library Media Department, Central Savannah River Area Media Association, Central Savannah River Area Reading Council, Georgia Association of Educational Leaders, District Treasurer for the Georgia Association of Curriculum and Instructional Supervisors, Professional Association of Georgia Educators, Richmond County Association of Principals, Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi honor society, Alpha Delta Kappa international honor society for women educators, Who’s Who in American Education 1989-90, vice president of Richmond County Retired Teachers Association.  

 

As president of the South Augusta Woman’s Club she was instrumental in establishing the Jeff Maxwell Branch of the Augusta Library. Mrs. Plemmons was a member of First Baptist Church of Augusta.

 

In addition to her husband and daughters, Linda James and Pam Gosney (Jeffery); family members include: grandchildren Abigail Annette Gosney, Hannah Elizabeth Gosney, and Laura Elizabeth James; brother Jess F. Tanner (June); many nieces and nephews and other loving family members. In addition to her parents, Ben F. and Lucille Shaw Tanner, she was preceded in death by her siblings Hubert Tanner, Timothy Jackson Tanner, Laura Jean Kirkland, Clora Helen Monk, and Johnnie Waters.

 

Funeral services were held Friday, February 8, 2019, at 4:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son, with Pastor Ron Doss officiating.  

 

Interment followed at Stokesville Baptist Church Cemetery, Axson, at 2:00 pm Saturday February 9, 2019.

 

Sims Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
